I was lucky to grow up in an extended family full of creatives and surrounded with music, writing, filmmaking, and visual arts. Although I fully absorbed this way of life, I never got serious about music until falling deep in love with bluegrass and modern stringband music in my late teens. By college, I was devouring further studies Irish sean-nos singing, West African drumming, samba batucada, and managed to get academic credits for learning to play a frame drum and a bunch of old fiddle tunes.
Straight out of school, I began teaching, recording, touring, and playing festivals. My hunger for new sounds led to many adventures: a stint with a bluegrass Grammy nominee, joining the jazz-fueled stringband Buellgrass led by bass and cello master Buell Neidlinger, and many tours with songwriters Casey Neill, Willy Mason, Rachel Harrington, and others.
Over 30 years, I have contributed to many recordings, and toured extensively throughout the US, Europe, and Japan. In 2024, I returned to school, earning a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. I now work at the cross-section of music, mental health, and somatic (body-based) awareness working both one-on-one and in groups.

INSTRUMENTS

MANDOLIN & GUITAR
Learn to improve your connection with practice. Grow your technique, harmony, rhythm chops, and more. Deep dive into the subtle and dynamic joys of flatpicking. I teach many styles, but focus on the core skills that make all music great: taste, tone, and timing.
SONGWRITING

ANATOMY OF THE SONG
I coach clients to better understand and apply the creative tools that make songs connect. Hooks, prosody, phrasing, space, dynamics, arc, structure, avoiding writer’s block, and much more. I encourage clients to dig deeper and find their own unique and authentic voice.
SOMATICS

BODY-BASED AWARENESS
Many music educators merely show you what to play. What often gets missed is how you feel in your body when you play. If you are uncomfortable, or holding tension, it comes through in the music. I help clients prioritize the direct present-moment experience of practice and performance.
